Monday, January 27, 2014, Oxfam Haiti will launch the project "Intercommunality and network of local authorities and non-state authorities for a shared management of a common territory". Cofinanced by the European Union, the aim of this initiative is to strengthen the process of democratic participation among non-state authorities and local authorities in the western region of the country. Through this project, Oxfam will accompany the creation of mechanisms for dialogue and coordination between the municipalities of Lac Azuei and the Haitian civil society for the joint management of their territory.

This governance initiative, will be implemented under the leadership of five municipalities within the area of Lake Azuei. The project is located in the strategic positioning of Oxfam of support the efforts of decentralization and strengthening of local power in order to cause structural and lasting change.

Oxfam engages in the communities as partners in initiatives to enhance citizen participation ; the strengthening leadership and of civil and political rights of women.

"This program is an opportunity to establish a participatory process that includes non-governmental organizations, representatives of civil society and local authorities," declared Damien Berrendorf, the Director of Oxfam Haiti "Especially, that the training will enable local officials and communities to take over the management of their communes and ensure that their communal development plan meets the needs of citizens and basic services and contribute to the increase in access to basic infrastructure."
