Haiti - Social : Launch of nationwide study on children «restavèks»

This week in Petion-ville, Charles Jean-Jacques, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour in collaboration with UNICEF and the International Labour Office (ILO), and in partnership with 29 national and international organizations has launched a national, quantitative and qualitative study on the phenomenon of child domestic workers "restavèks" in Haiti, around the theme "The child domestics : understanding for better action".

Minister Charles Jean-Jacques, said that to eradicate the intolerable situation of the exploitation of children in Haiti, it was necessary to collect accurate data on the number and situation of child domestic workers, with a view to provide sustainable solutions. During this survey which will last 10 months, more than 16,000 families will be interviewed throughout the country. The survey will be divided into several phases : institutional analysis; data collection on the ground and development of a joint positioning. The results of this extensive survey will be presented in February 2015 and will be followed by the implementation of the recommendations.

The Minister considers that it is inconceivable to XXI century, in a country that abolished slavery, to have children as slaves.
