 Haiti - Education : In preparation for the back to school

According to the school calendar adopted following internal and external consultations, Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) confirmed in a note that back to school for the academic year 2014-2015 is set at Monday, September 8, 2014.

To this end, a set of measures to facilitate the back was arrested by the Ministry "

These measures relate in particular to the subsidy and the provision in school textbooks, subsidy to universal education, the distribution of school kits and uniforms, provision of school meals and interventions in term of school infrastructure.

Particular emphasis will be placed on teacher training and professionalization of the teaching profession and reframing of Universal Schooling Program, Free and Compulsory (PSUGO) which are among the set of actions to improve the quality of education.

In addition, many major decisions are in preparation. They relate, in particular, the national state examination system and the implementation of the Decree establishing the special status of educational staff resulting, inter alia, by the obligation of teaching permit.

MENFP already inviting technical directors, departmental directors, inspectors, directors of schools and teachers to get to work and to take all necessary steps to ensure that the academic year is a success for the benefit of all young people in the country."

Some figures on the education system in Haiti :

Haiti has 16.072 schools, 56% rural and 44% urban;

88% of these schools are non-public against only 12% of public institutions;

88.227 teachers are in the Haitian education system;

1 teacher for 36 students (average);

77% of children are enrolled in school (2013);

72% of students are over-age;

26.73% of public sector teachers are normaliens against 13% in the non-public sector.
