Haiti - Social : The fight against illiteracy, one of the Government's priorities

The increase in the rate of literacy in the country is one of the priorities of the Government Martelly/Lamothe, for the reduction of social inequality, the fight against extreme poverty and social inclusion of all.

After having carried these two last year, to literacy of 252.488 people, the Government reaffirms its commitment to eradicate illiteracy throughout the national territory, intends, through its 6th national functional literacy campaign, launched on March 21 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10766-haiti-education-launch-of-the-6th-national-literacy-campaign.html , which will extend over 24 months in the 10 departments of the country, increase its actions to allow that 450,000 Haitians aged 14 to 50 years to learn to read and write in order to facilitate better integration and participation of these citizens in the development project for Haiti. Literacy classes were opened in 96 communes in the country, a way to bring the bread of instruction at the gates of citizens.

"Literacy is a duty of the state, a social justice that the Government wants render to all those who can not read, to all who live in extreme poverty. It is necessary that they be literate, they are integrated into society. Literacy is a priority area of national concern. So it must be supported by all Haitians," declared Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe.

On this World Literacy Day, 8 September 2014, the Government will present a report of its mass literacy campaigns. As part of the 6th campaign, it will share the perspectives of its policy to accelerate its fight against illiteracy, its tireless fight for the construction of the rule of law where fundamental rights of all Haitians will be ensured.
