Haiti - Reconstruction : Launch of phases 3 and 4 of Canal of Bienac

The section of the Community Violence Reduction (RCV) of the Minustah, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other partners launched the phases 4 and 5 of the construction of the canal of morne Bienac, in the presence of Deputy Mayor, Erick André; of the representative of Departmental Delegate, Elan Dubois ; of representative of the Departmental Directorate of the Ministry of Public Works, the engineer Frantz Guillaume ; of representative of the Minusta, Michael Goble and of the IOM, Drew Kutschenreuter.

This project of erection of drywall over a length of 220 linear meters is funded by the RVC up to US $ 400,000 and work will be carried out by IOM and local partners.

With the completion of the canal works, cleaning and rehabilitation of canals, Bienac communities in particular he city of Gonaives in general, will be protected against flood risk and other health problems related to public sanitation, such as the reduction of risks related to waterborne diseases.

Thanking the Minustah and IOM Erick André pointed out that "the realization of the first phase of the canal works have contributed significantly to reduce the risk of flooding during the rains that swooped last season, of the city of Gonaives."

Michael Goble pointed out "the contribution of the population of Bienac to the performance of work, reflects the importance it attaches to this project, which has created more than 650 jobs, whose 30% are women."

Jean Longchamps, a representative of the community of Bienac, who heads the Local Committee for Support to Projects (CLAC) believes that "these works have a twofold objective: to prevent the risk of loss of life, as was the case in previous floods in Gonaives and sanitation of the neighborhood of Bienac which now knows better sanitary conditions and public health."
