Haiti - Economy : The country sinks into inflation (July 2015)

Amounted to 239.3 in July 2015, against 234.6 in June, the Index of Consumer Prices (Base 100 in August 2004) showed a strong monthly growth rate of 2% in July against 1.9% in June or 9.3% yoy.

The indices that have most contributed to the monthly increase include: "Food, drinks and tobacco" (+ 2.5%), "Clothing and fabrics, footwear" (+ 3.1%), "Planning, Equipment and Housing Maintenance" (+ 1.9%), Health (+ 2.1%) and "Other Goods and Services" (+ 3.8%).

Note that the increase in the index "Food, Beverage & Tobacco" which represents over 50% of the household budget comes particularly of the price of rice (+ 0.8%), millet (+3.1), corn in grain (+ 1.8%), ground corn (+ 1.4%) and wheat flour (+2.8%) of corn flakes (+ 4.0%), bread (+ 1.5%), of beef (+ 2.3%) and pork (+ 2.2%), of goat meat (+ 2.5%), poultry (+ 4.1%), ham (+ 3.8%), fresh fish (+ 3.0%), edible oil (+ 1.6%), bananas (+ 4.7%), the pumpkin (+ 5%) , the marker (+ 4.7%), green peas (+ 3.5%), dry peas (+ 5.7%), eggplant (+ 5.7%), diu cabbage (+4.6 %), onion (+ 5.3%), carrots (+ 5.3%), tomatoes (+ 4.3%), yam (+ 4.8%), the malanga (+ 4.9%), of potatoes (+ 5.4%) and potatoes (+ 5.2%), the real tree (+ 4.3%), orange (+ 4.6%), the chadèque (+ 4.5%), lemon (+ 2.3%) and other alcoholic beverages (+ 2.2%)

The increase observed in the index of "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" is mainly due to the increase in products such as tissues (+ 4.3%), the costume, universal jacket (+ 3.3%), shirts (+ 1.7%), the trousers for men (+ 1.7%), the dress (+ 4.4%), of the pants, jacket (+ 1.6%), clothing clothing (+ 2.4%), the and tennis shoes (+ 4.6 %%) and sandals (+ 3.5%).

The upward trend of the index "Planning, Equipment and Housing Maintenance" comes mainly from the price of living room furniture (+ 2.7%), the dining room (+ 3.1%), the bed (+ 4.1%), the mattress (+ 5.4%), the bed linen (+ 2.4%), curtains (+ 2.2%), refrigerator (+ 3.4%), insecticide (+ 3.3%), disinfectant (+2.5 %) and miscellaneous services (+ 1.3%).

At the origin of rising of the "Health" function are the increases in drug prices (+ 2.1%), corrective lenses for spectacles (+ 2.7%), fees paid to doctors (+ 2.5%) and of hospital expenses (+ 2.3%).

As for the increase in the index "Other Goods and Services" it resulting mainly from rising prices of : toothpaste (+ 2.3%), shampoo (+ 5.6%), perfume, water toilet (+ 6.2%), toilet powder (+ 3.7%) and shoe cleaning (+ 13.5%).

General Price Index by Region (Variation on a month) :

Metropolitan Area: +7.0% (Includes Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquets.)

North: +2.1% (including the departments of North, Northeastern and Northwest)

South: +1.9% (including departments of South Grand Anse and Nippes)

Transversal: +1.9% (including departments of Centre and Artibonite)
