Haiti - Education : Back to school threatened by unions

While Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of National Education, keeps repeating that "everything is ready for the next school year" on September 7, teacher unions are threatening to boycott this back to school.

The Minister Manigat, in a letter to the teacher unions, dated 1 September 2015, inviting them to a meeting at the Ministry, this Thursday, September 3 to find a compromise so that the return is done without incident, confirmed Millody Vincent, the head of communications of the Ministry of Education.

Nesmy Manigat believes that his ministry and the teachers' unions have the shared responsibility for the success of the next school year, hence the invitation to talk about the implementation of agreements already signed between the two parties, but also for share the roadmap of this new academic year.

Josué Mérilien, the Coordinator of the National Union of Haitian Normaliens (UNNOH), which confirms having received this invitation, requires the full payment of salary arrears, the monitoring of cases of teachers with a letter of appointment and health insurance card for all teachers. He says that if at the end of that meeting, no concrete decision to meet the teachers' demands are taken "national mobilization movement will be maintained for 7 September 2015."
