Haiti - FLASH : Canada suspends the measure of deportation of Haitians...

John McCallum, Canada's Minister of Immigration, confirmed the decision of the new Government Trudeau, to reinstate the temporary moratorium on the deportation of Haitians nationals and Zimbabwean who had been removed by the previous Government.

Recall that the Harper Government had terminated the temporary moratorium on deportations, December 1, 2014 and required that all concerned citizens send their application for permanent residence before June 1, 2015, otherwise they risked being repatriated to their country of origin. Ottawa had justified this decision by stating that the conditions in Haiti and Zimbabwe had improved and there was no more generalized risk to the entire civilian population in these countries.

This measure affects about 3,200 immigrants (Haitian and Zimbabweans) including nearly 2,500 Haitians without status, living mainly in the Montreal area who enjoyed the moratorium since 2004, because of their immigration or asylum demand rejected, but who had not been sent back to their country because of a situation deemed too dangerous.

This decision will give time for the government to clarify records and nationals threatened with deportation for a stay to allow them to regularize their residency status in Canada, said Thursday the Minister McCallum.
