Haiti - Elections : USA continues to demand the holding of elections

While some senators, deputies and political observers cry to U.S. interference in Haitian elections, on Thursday at the invitation of President a.i. Jocelerme Privert, Kenneth Merten, the Special Coordinator of the US State Department for Haiti, accompanied by Ambassador of the United States accredited to Haiti, Peter Mulrean and the Policy Officer Lydia Hall have been received at the National Palace. This 48-hour visit to Haiti of Kenneth Merten, aimed to take stock of the political situation in general and the progress of the electoral process in particular.

President a.i. Privert welcomed the progress in the implementation of the Agreement of February 5, including the installation of a government and of a Provisional Electoral Council (CEP). Kenneth Merten, accompanied by the Ambassador Mulrean shared his reading of the situation and the U.S. concerns about the electoral process. Jocelerme Privert explained the importance of the work of the Verification Commission and reiterated his willingness to achieve the holding of free, fair and democratic elections. The Head of State and Kenneth Merten agreed on the need to hold elections in the interest of democracy and the Haitian people.

During its stay the American delegation met with Haitian government officials involved in the implementation of the Agreement of February 5, including Prime Minister Enex Jean-Charles and Haiti's partners of the international community. He also met Cholzer Chancy, the President of the Chamber of Deputies in Parliament and visited the Senate to express their concerns about the political crisis and concerns over the duration of the transitional government https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-17310-haiti-news-zapping-politics.html

The U.S. government continues to call for the completion of elections initiated in 2015 as soon as possible and took note of the statement of the CEP, announcing that the electoral timetable will be published between 15 and 31 May.

Kenneth Merten has left Haiti, Friday, April 29 in the afternoon.
