Haiti - Insecurity : The PNH makes the point for the holiday season

Garry Desrosiers, spokesman for the National Police of Haiti (PNH) on Wednesday presented to the press, the assessment of his institutions for the period from December 13 to 26, 2010. During this period, the PNH arrested 573 individuals (an average of 40 a day), 6 firearms were seized, 5 people arrested for possession of illegal weapons and 556 cases were processed. He noted a significant increase in rape cases indicating that 10 cases had been reported and 11 people arrested in connection with these cases. He reminded that the reinforced security measures put in place for the holiday season will continue until January 6, 2011.

About the lynching of dozens of vodouisants alleged to have transmitted cholera by witchcraft, mostly in the southern region but also in the Central Plateau, he said that the PNH had arrested a dozen people and issued warrants for fifty people suspected of involvement in these crimes.

Mr. Desrosiers has also indicated that in the prisons of the departments of the West, North, Artibonite and South, 92 cases of cholera had been reported and that 55 detainees had died of the disease. With a mortality rate of 59.78%, we can interrogate about the actions (or their absences) of prevention and treatment of cholera put in place in prisons. This mortality rate is the highest ever recorded in the country since the epidemic began.
