Haiti - FLASH : Terrible road drama in Gonaives at least 34 dead...

On Sunday morning before dawn, at the entrance of the Gonaïves, after having overthrown two passers-by, the driver of a bus fled and rammed into three walking bands (rara), according to the first information...

"The bus first struck two pedestrians, killing one and wounding one, and then fled to face three rara bands. He drove over and 33 people died," explained Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, director of the DPC.

According to a first report of the Civil Protection there would be at least 34 dead and about fifteen wounded... 17 wounded are being treated at the hospital La Prvidence according to the latest information from the DPC. "The death toll from the accident occured this morning before dawn on National #1 amounts to 34 dead and 17 wounded," the institution said Sunday afternoon.

For his part Faustin Joseph, Civil Protection Coordinator for the Artibonite Department, said that people who were not victims of the accident tried to burn the bus with the passengers inside... saying that following the intervention of the police the bus, his passengers and his driver were placed in security in the police station of Gonaïves.
