Haiti - Les Cayes : End of the strike, on a backdrop of dissatisfaction

The business community of Les Cayes, has put an end to the two days of strikes organized against the increasing of insecurity and acts of banditry, which affects mainly the merchants. The strike which has paralyzed almost all the activities started on January 6, following the assassination of the famous businessman Berlin Aléandre occurred on December 31, 2010.

Pierre Henry Demery, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the South, said he was disappointed and dissatisfied with the outcome of the discussions held during those 48 hours with the authorities. The business community has met Paul Denis, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety which has recognized that the increasing of insecurity was due to the weakness of the state, promising that his ministry would support the business sector in its search for security.

For Pierre Henry Déméry, it is just a political statement without any serious commitment on the resources to implement to ensure the safety of merchants and citizens. He recalled that this strike was only the beginning and that other measures will be taken by traders, if the authorities were slow to resolve the situation in the city.
