Haiti - Politics : DR asks UN to help Haiti with «more actions than words»

Friday, Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Vargas Maldonado asked Antonio Guterres, the new Secretary General of the United Nations, that international solidarity with Haiti is expressed with "more actions than words".

According to a note from the Dominican Chancellery, Vargas also explained to Guterres the process of regularization of foreigners residing illegally in the Dominican Republic. Mostly of Haitian origin and stressed the important cost to the Dominican State stressing that "The Dominican Republic is, and has always been the country most in solidary with Haiti, on the understanding that the development of our neighbor reduces the social pressure that migration exerts on our country."

According to the note, António Guterres urged the Dominican Republic to continue to support Haiti while Vargas insisted on the need for the international community to express their solidarity with "concrete actions".

A position shared by former President Leonel Fernández during his American tour on "Democracy, Modernity and Progress", which recently warned the international community in Manhattan that the Dominican Republic could not assume alone the problems of Haitians "The Dominican Republic can not do this, because instead of saving Haiti, we will both sink."
