Haiti - Cholera : UN wants to transfer $40M to help Haiti

According to a report released on Tuesday, the United Nations proposes that $40.5 million of the unspent budget of the United Nations peacekeeping mission (Minustah) for 2015-2016 be transferred to the fund for the fight against cholera in Haiti.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented the proposal to the United Nations General Assembly to address the major deficit of the $400 400 million Trust Fund https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20204-haiti-cholera-funding-failure-for-the-$400m-un-funds.html needed to help Haiti recover from the epidemic.

It should be remembered that so far only seven countries have contributed to the 400 million fund launched in December 2016 by former Secretary Ban Ki-moon and which has so far proved to be a real failure : Chile, France, India, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Great Britain, for a total of $ 2.67 million, as well as $15,901 from the United Nations Foundation.

In addition, excluding Trust Funds, Canada contributed CAD $6 million (± USD 4.6 million) and Japan for 300 million Yen (± USD 2.6 million).

Secretary-General Guterres intends to appoint a high-level envoy to develop a fund-raising strategy that will bring contributions from countries but also from other sources. The General Assembly will consider proposals for raising funds for Haiti next month.
