Haiti - Environment : 1,2 million euros for an innovative project

Tuesday, the Ministry of the Environment, the Office of the National Authorizing Officer and the European Union launched an innovative project in the commune of Léogâne to reduce the vulnerability of the local population to the disruptions caused by climate change.

Named "Solutions to Climate Disruption in the Carrefour/Léogâne Watershed", this project, financed to the tune of €1.2 million and implemented by Caritas Switzerland and the association "Concertation et Action pour le Développement", is derived directly from the Support Program to the consideration of climate change in national development of Haiti (AP3C) and the Global Alliance initiative against climate change (AMCC), both supported by the European Union.

This project targets 10,000 urban families and 2,500 rural families. It combines several activities aimed at changing certain practices of the population which often exploit its environment in an irrational manner, becoming more vulnerable to the consequences of climate change because of this degradation.

Among the actions planned include : of activities to disseminate of energy-efficient cooking techniques based on bagasse pellets to limit the use of charcoal, reforestation of communal sections via levies for environmental services, the improvement of agricultural production techniques, the use of coal powder, also called "biochar", and the encouragement of agroforestry practices.
