Haiti - Literature : Anthony Phelps, Grand Prize of poetry 2017 of the Académie Française

On Thursday, the Académie Française honored our brilliant compatriot, poet and novelist Anthony Phelps (born in Port-au-Prince in 1928, living in Canada since 1964) by awarding him for the whole of his work, the Grand Prize of poetry 2017, an exceptional tribute to an eminent poet of French expression. The French Embassy in Haiti associates with the Haitian people, especially the literary sector, to address its armest greetings to Mr. Phelps for this supreme consecration

"The Embassy of Haiti in Canada, wholeheartedly and with a legitimate pride, this high distinction that is subject Mr. Phelps Poet and novelist, his fame, in both cases, thus extends beyond the borders of Haiti and Quebec and extends to the entire French-speaking world."

Aged 89, the Awards of Excellence already received by our famous Haitian poet are numerous :

  • 1980 Casa de las Américas Prize, for "La Bélière caraïbe" at the Éditions Nouvelle Optique ;

  • 1987 Casa de las Américas Prize, for "Orchidée nègre" to the Édition Triptyque (Montréal) ;

  • 2012 Poetry Prize, Island Book Fair, Ouessant, for "Nomade je fus de très vieille mémoire" (personal anthology) to the Éditions Bruno Doucey (Paris) ;

  • 2014 Poetry Prize "Gatien-Lapointe – Jaime-Sabines" for 'Mujer América / Femme Amérique" to the Éditions Écrits des Forges ;

  • 2014 Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters (France) ;

  • 2016 Prize Carbet ans od Tout-Monde for the whole of his work.

The work of Anthony Phelps (some twenty titles) is translated into Spanish, English, Russian, Ukrainian, German, Italian, Japanese and some of his books are included in the French studies of several universities in the United States, : Princeton, Saint Michael's College (Vermont) and Iowa State University.
