Haiti - FLASH : 151 Haitian boat-people intercepted off the Bahamas

Friday, the United States Coast Guard transferred 151 Haitian illegal migrants to the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF), which were intercepted during two operations off the coast of the Bahamas.

The first interception was carried out on the high seas 56 kilometers south of Ragged Island when the Coast Guard spotted an overloaded vessel of about 40 'carrying 78 Haitians. On Wednesday, 73 other Haitians were intercepted in the southwest of Great Inagua aboard a boat about 50'.

"The Caribbean and Florida Straits are dangerous and unforgiving for migrants on illegal and ill-advised voyages in overloaded vessels with little or no safety gear needlessly placing lives at risk," deplored Cmdr. Willie Carmichael, deputy chief of enforcement for the Coast Guard’s 7th District.

It should be recalled that all illegal immigrants, irrespective of their nationality, are transferred to the authorities of that archipelago under the Integrated Maritime Agreement between the two Governments. According to the Coast Guard, 1,791 Haitian immigrants have attempted to illegally reach the United States by sea since 1 October 2016 and were repatriated to Haiti, compared with 1,872 in the previous period.
