Haiti - USA : U.S. government revokes visas of Haitian officials

Shortly after the wave of violence that followed the announcement of preliminary election results December 7, 2010, Patrick Leahy, Democratic Senator from Vermont, had suggested the cancellation of visas and freezing the assets of Haitian officials and their relatives to find a solution to the post-election crisis.

The U.S. administration has recognized Friday it had revoked visas of several top officials of the Haitian government, refusing to identify the persons concerned and to specify the date on which these U.S. visas were canceled. CNN believes understands that these revocations involve at least two dozen people.

"We have taken action against a number of Haitian citizens, and this is something that we will continue to evaluate [...] and to the extent that there are individuals who are connected with episodes of violence or corruption. We will not hesitate to take" said Philip Crowley, the spokesman for the State Department during his daily press conference.

An official of the platform INITE has indicated that, among other : Jean Joseph Molière, number two of INITE, Jean Francois Chamblain, current adviser Jude Célestin, Gérald Germain, Minister of Social Affairs and Senator of the West John Joël Joseph were among those affected by these revocation of visas, without giving reasons.
