Haiti - Education : Camp Corail, back to school after 10 months of waiting !

On 10 April 2010, the camp Corail was the first IDP camp to open after the earthquake. A model camp had said the authorities, to encourage people to leave the makeshift camps for the "comfort" and "security". Very quickly the camp Corail has proved to be a failure, too far, with no job, only tents lined up in a desert of dust and thorns roasted by the sun... This camp was to protect the displaced from flooding... Storms and tempests that have flooded and partially destroyed the camp a few months later, have demonstrated that the location was poorly chosen.

In June 2010, Didier Le Bret, Ambassador of France in Haiti, was promoting the culture and the importance of having community facilities for education, offering 500 books for reading workshops to childrens who dreamed of a school in front of the symbolic layout of the future educational institution...

10 months after the opening of this model "of failure", a school (transitional construction) was finally opened in late January. 9 classes, used in rotation, with a capacity of 50 students, make it possible to accommodate 600 students. This transitional construction should resist to a Category 2 hurricane officials say. Let us hope that unlike the tents designed to withstand storms, destroyed by a violent storms, this school protects the students...

Boyer Sansoir, the Director of the school welcomes the fact that many children who previously were forced to stay in tents are finally in class... However, with only 60% of teaching staff the school can not operate at full capacity. The Ministry of Education, promised additional resources for the next school year...

Optimistic, the school principal wants to make of it ,a reference establishment. "If we have the necessary equipment and accessories, we will have a modern school". Meanwhile, teachers do not yet have employment contracts and the institution has only black board and benches, and does not yet have the necessary teaching materials for teachers and students, no electricity, no photocopiers, not even chalk... The leaders of the institution waiting for the promises of school kits made by UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) and those of educational materials from the public authorities becomes a reality...

The fact is that after 10 months, it was impossible to build a real permanently school, provide it with sufficient human resources and essential educational materials. After the fiasco of this camp, the opening of this school under such conditions is far to symbolize the reconstruction of our country and hardly mask and the accumulation of failures.
