Haiti - Economy: +0.9% inflation in January 2018

For the month of January 2018, the General Consumer Price Index (base 100 in August 2004) stood at 330.1 against 327.2 the previous month, showing an increase in inflation of + 0.9% on a monthly basis, slightly higher than December + 0.8%. However, year-on-year (last 12 months) inflation stands at 13.2%, slightly better than the previous month when inflation was 13.3%.

The monthly rise in inflation of + 0.9% is mainly the result of the behavior of consumption functions: "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (+ 1.0%), "Rent of Housing, Energy and Water" (+ 1.0%), "Development, Equipment and Maintenance of Housing" (+ 1.2%) and "Health" (+ 1.0%).

The positive change in the "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" index, which accounts for more than 50% of the household budget, comes from, among other things, from the rise in prices: cornflakes (+ 1.2%), mirliton, pumpkins (+ 1.9%) , onions (+ 1.4%), meat on average (+ 1.7%), herring on average (+ 1.5%), coconut (+ 2.8%), banana (+ 1.8%), giraumon (+ 2.0%), eggplant (+ 2.3%), potatoes (+ 1.4%), carrots (+ 2.0%), malanga (+ 1.6%), cassava (+ 1.5%), potatoes (+ 1.4%), chadec (+ 1.8%), lemon (+ 1.3%) and cocoa powder (+ 1.4%).

The rise in the "Housing Rent, Energy and Water" index comes from the change in the prices of rent for housing (+ 1.9%), propane gas (+ 0.3%) and candle wax (+ 0.3%).

The increase in the "Accommodation, Equipment and Maintenance" index is due to: dining room (+ 1.0%), insecticide (+ 1.6%), disinfectant (+2.0), domestic staff salary (+ 2.1%) and other services (+ 10.6%).

Finally, the increase in the "Health" index is attributable to price increases: corrective eyewear (+ 0.6%), hospitalization costs (+ 0.6%) and physician fees (+1.4%).
