Haiti - Riots : Collateral damage, 673 jobs lost at Delimart

In a letter to its employees, the Delimart S.A. announces that following the looting, "déchouquages" and fires of several of its stores, it is forced to lay off 673 employees until further notice.

Letter of the Delimart :

"Following the unfortunate events of recent days in which the Delimart stores in Delmas 32, Delmas 30 and Clercine were looted, déchouqués and some burned, it is with great sorrow and bitterness that the Directorate General of Delimart notify you and your families that all company operations are and remain suspended due to force majeure.

Delimart is forced to lay off all its employees until further notice. The latter will be contacted and recalled as needed and as and when.

This closure of our stores will severely and lastingly affect hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. Our local suppliers will bear the brunt of the negative effects. Moreover, the entire national economy will suffer as the unemployment rate rises.

The Directorate General of Delimart is aware of the precarious and difficult situation in which you suddenly find yourself and promises to do everything possible to relieve your pain and those of your family unfairly weeping.

As you know, we have enjoyed your services immensely, some of you have been with us since the beginning, 20 years ago and we rely on your understanding and support to fuel our determination to continue serving our loyal customers.

We wish you good luck and recommend that you do not lose hope of becoming productive elements of our society."
