Haiti - Justice : Climate of violence, the ombudsman indignated

Me Renan Hedouville, the Ombudsman, expresses "his indignation and his deepest concern" face the climate of violence that has reached a level that can not be more unacceptable and outrageous where shops, hotels, private banks, super markets, public institutions have were ransacked, looted, burnt, following the announcement, by the government of an increase in fuel prices at the pump, considered as inappropriate by more than one.

Moreover, he underlines "peaceful citizens, retailers and street vendors, people in vulnerable situations have been victims of this outbreak of violence that has fallen on the country with the inaction and passivity of some police authorities. According to some concordant sources, many of these acts were allegedly committed by armed individuals who were members of gangs that have been terrorizing the country for several months with impunity, that is to say without being pursued by the police and the judicial authorities [...]"

In his capacity as Protector of the Citizen, while expressing his solidarity with the victims, Hedouville condemns any act of violence that endangers life and the good of citizens. He invites the Head of State to analyze and evaluate the level of performance of his team and to consider with the other constitutional authorities measures that can facilitate political stability and economic progress in the interest of the Haitian population.
