Haiti - Society : CARICOM signs to regulate gasoline prices

Wednesday Ronald Beaudin, Minister of Finance and Jocelyne Colimon Fethière, Minister of Commerce had announced a series of increase in price of the petroleum products on the local market ranging from 2% to over 40%.

Yesterday Friday, the energy ministers of member countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have announced that they will implement a policy of energy saving to regulate the prices and secure the supply of petroleum products in the region.

During the session of the Council for Trade and Economic Development, members of the regional bloc have approved the project which, inter alia sets out the rules relating to energy and transports of the common market of the CARICOM.

The project developed by Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago aims to provide mechanisms of regional cooperation in order to maintain unchanged the price of gasoline.

Note that since the beginning of March, six islands, members of the CARICOM, whose Haiti, have significantly increased the fuel prices.

Parallel to the increase in fuel prices, which occurred just after the announcement, public transport prices have increased by 25% or even 50% on some line, causing tension between users and drivers, explaining that they reflect the increase. Several unions including the Association of Owners and Drivers of Haiti (APCH) and the Federation of Haitian Public Carriers (FTPH) have launched Thursday a watchword for a general strike for Monday, March 28.
