Since last September, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) is working to illuminate the emergency camps. A project carried out thanks to the contribution of the famous American musical group "Linkin Park". An initiative that should help reduce violence on these sites often overcrowded.

Some 200 street lights, powered by solar energy have been installed since October 2010, in a quarantine camp. Equipment provided by funds from awareness campaigns orchestrated by the American musical group "Linkin Park" titled "Download to donate for Haiti."

For Nabil Chemly, in charge of the lighting project of the camps within UNFPA, it is primarily to "protect women". To this end, the streetlights are specifically placed "near the showers, latrines, water points and the major gathering points," he said.

An amount of US$300,000 has already been invested in this project. However, "the needs are so important," noted Nabil Chemly... It is difficult to estimate the quantity of street lights required for the lighting of the 1.061 sites identified.

This week, a delegation led by Peter Yeo, UNFPA and bassist, Dave Matthews of Linkin Park, was in Port - au-Prince to get an idea of the situation in the IDP camps, "I am very pleased with what has already been done" declared Dave Matthews, during a visit to the camp Corail Cesselesse (north of Port-au-Prince) where forty of these street lights have been installed. However, "much remains to be done to help victims," added the bassist of the musical group who has promised to continue his campaign to sensitize donors to the Haitian cause.
