Haiti - Economy : Decline of 1.2% in the index of economic activity

The Global Index of the Economic Indicator of Economic Activity (ICAE-HAITI, base 100 in 2007-2008), reached 145.7 in the second quarter of fiscal year 2018-2019 (January-March 2019), against 147.4 in same quarter last year, showing a year-on-year decline (last 12 months) of 1.2%.

The contributions of the three main sectors of the economy to the evolution of ICAE Global in the second quarter of the fiscal year 2018-2019 are thus distributed :

Primary Sector - 1.4% :

Compared with the same period of the year (2017-2018), when it posted a 3.0% increase, the primary sector's ICAE fell by an annual rate of -1.4% in the second fiscal quarter (2018-2019). And -1.7% for the first two quarters. The agricultural branch has recorded from January to March 2019 a decrease of -1.5% on an annual basis which can be explained on the one hand, by the prolongation of the drought which has raged in the country since last year and by and the delay in the distribution of inputs to farmers.

Secondary Sector + 1.4% :

Unlike the second quarter last year, when it fell -1.4%, the Secondary Sector's CIAE in the second quarter of the fiscal year achieved a 1.4% growth. All components of the sector contributed to this increase. Manufacturing Industries +1.5%; Construction : +1.2%; Electricity and Water + 1.8%.

Tertiary Sector - 1.8% :

The Commercial Sector declined in the second quarter of fiscal year 2018-2019, with an annual decrease of ICAE of -1.8%. This negative evolution of the sector results from the evolution of branches : Trade: -3.5%; Restaurant and Hotel: -5.6%; Transport and Communications: -0.4%; Financial Institutions: -1.4%
