Haiti - Politic : Meeting Martelly-Mulet

This Wednesday, April 27, 2011, the President elected Michel Joseph Martelly met in the offices of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minsutah) in Pacot, the representative of Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Mr. Edmond Mulet and other important members of Minsutah.

The objective of this meeting was for the President Martelly to have a better understanding of the UN mission in Haiti and to begin the debates for restructuring and the preparation of the departure of Minustah of country.

President Martelly also used this meeting to share the "roadmaps" of government concerning the strengthening of the rule of law and security, particularly capacity building of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and the establishment of a Haitian armed forces. Other important points raised were the revival of the economy and the current political situation, particularly the issue of the disputed elected of 2nd round, the next parliamentary elections, local elections of 2011 and the ongoing constitutional amendment. President Martelly, also discussed the importance of the relocation of people living under tents.

Mr. Mulet, meanwhile, recalled the main mission of the Minsutah which is to help to ensure a certain level of stability and security in the country and the importance of such a mission in the establishment of safe conditions favorable to attracting international investment in the country, establish the rule of law and correct the institutional weaknesses, among others.

This initial meeting allowed to both sides to have a better understanding of the work already underway and allowed President Martelly, to clearly indicate the priorities of his government to the UN representative.

Upon the announcement of preliminary results of 4 April, announcing his victory, the President elected Joseph Michel Martelly quickly set to work and initiated a series of meetings with influential members of national and international communities.

This meeting with the Minustah follows a tour of 3 days in Washington where the President Joseph Michel Martelly met the President of International Monetary Fund, of the World Bank, the direction of the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB), the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and influential members of the American press.
