Haiti - FLASH : A school of Haiti pre-selected for the Structural Awards 2019

The Institution of Structural Engineers unveiled the list of pre-selected candidates for the 52nd edition of the Structural Awards 2019, which brings together 49 outstanding engineering projects from around the world. The short-listed candidates were chosen for their excellence, creativity and innovation, as well as for their elegance and details. Sustainability, economic viability and value for money were also key considerations.

The pre-selected projects are divided into 12 categories, each highlighting the creative work of structural engineers and the service they provide.

In the list of 4 pre-selected projects in Haiti is "The Reference" www.istructe.org/structuralawards/the-shortlist/sustainability/la-reference a charitable engineering project to build a new High School in Haiti. Located in Ganthier in a highly seismic zone and prone to hurricanes. This school was built with limited access to building materials and its design required a lot of creativity. A lot of time was spent educating and training workers, artisans and the local community during the construction process.

This outstanding school competes in two categories: the Award for Structures in Extreme Conditions and the Sustainability Award

Other projects selected worldwide include www.istructe.org/structuralawards/the-shortlist : the world's tallest statue, located in Kevadia, India, a stadium with a rotating petal roof in Hangzhou, China. China, a mega-basement 22m deep under a 5-star hotel in London, as well as buildings with the best seismic performance in San Francisco, New Zealand and Haiti.

Professor Tim Ibell, Chair of the Jury, said, "Our profession has again demonstrated extraordinary innovation over the past year. The 2019 shortlist offers many great examples of the ingenuity, creativity and skill of structural engineers worldwide. As the guardians of public safety, structural engineers ensure that buildings and bridges can withstand all kinds of loading, but issues such as creativity and sustainability are at least as important in these awards "

The winners will be announced at the Awards dinner and ceremony on November 15 at the Brewery in London.
