Haiti - UN : The Dominican Republic urgently convenes the Security Council

On Thursday, Miguel Vargas, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that the United Nations Security Council had met urgently, late in the evening, at the request of the Dominican Republic (non-permanent member of the Council), in order to assess the serious socio-political and economic crisis in Haiti, which has been paralyzed for more than two weeks by popular demonstrations calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse.

Miguel Vargas said the meeting aimed to seek support from member countries for a dialogue leading to a national agreement to end violence and instability in Haiti.

"We support the democratically elected President Jovenel Moïse and draw attention to the responsibility of the international community and the need not to abandon the Republic of Haiti", said Miguel Vargas to the members. advice

In his view, the situation in Haiti has a negative impact on the Dominican Republic, which has been forced to strengthen the security of its borders while binational trade has significantly decreased in the border area, affecting populations in both nations.

Reminding the Council member firmly, "What we see in Haiti these days may seem trivial, but it is unacceptable for countries like those represented on the Security Council."
