Haiti - Kenscoff : Revitalization of the culture of coffee

To "Nouvelle Touraine", 1st municipal section of Kenscoff, at almost 1,600 meters above sea level, "Solidarité Haïtienne pour le Développement de Kenscoff" (SOHADERK), a non-profit socio-economic, agricultural and educational organization, continues its project to revitalize the cultivation of coffee, executed within the framework of the "Small Grant Facility" program, financed by the American Agency for International Development (USAID - Haiti).

A total of 100,000 seedlings of coffee and other forest species (such as grevillea...) and fruit (loquat and avocado) are currently in production in the nursery pending the next rainy season to be distributed and planted.

This coffee-based agroforestry system will help combat erosion and accelerated deforestation, and also regenerate soil fertility in addition to being a source of stable income for the beneficiaries in the near future through the production of coffee and of fruits.

This project is also a source of job creation in the community. Currently, two nurserymen and 10 nursery assistant workers are working to manage and maintain these 100,000 seedlings in the nursery.

Finally, it should be noted that in addition to providing quality seedlings, SOHADERK also organizes training sessions for beneficiaries for better management of their agroforestry plots. It should be noted that as part of its project, SOHADERK has already transplanted 162,000 seedlings out of the 550,000 planned.
