Haiti - Storm ELSA : The red alert is lifted, it's time to take stock

On Saturday July 3, 2021, tropical storm Elsa hit the southern peninsula of Haiti causing strong gusts of wind throughout the day but precipitation was lower than expected and on Sunday the red alert was lifted on the entire national territory.

The first preliminary reports of the Civil Protection indicate significant damage in agriculture in the Southeast, mainly in the cultivation of avocado, corn and bananas. An in-depth analysis of the impact of winds on crops is necessary. In particular, we are awaiting the results of the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (EDAB), underlines the ing.agr. Talot Bertrand, Specialist in Environmental Education and Secretary General of PROMODEV.

Apart from the impact on crops, many house roofs have been blown off by the wind, fallen trees have been reported and power lines interrupted.

On Sunday in the town of Les Cayes, Civil Protection brigadiers were busy clearing streets strewn with trees and various objects and restoring traffic...

No damage to roads and infrastructure has been reported. The rest of the national territory seems to have been largely spared by ELSA.

Three injuries have been reported so far and no deaths.

Assessments by authorities and humanitarian partners are continuing. More information is expected to be collected during Monday, July 5.

To be continued...
