Haiti - Politic : DHS does not tolerate abuses against migrants

Following the revolting scenes showing the Border Patrols on horseback unceremoniously pursuing Haitian migrants, the DHS Department of Internal Security after viewing the footage https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34799-haiti-usa-democrat-nancy-pelosi-in-defense-of-haitians-stranded-at-the-mexican-border.html made the following statement :

DHS statement :

"DHS does not tolerate the abuse of migrants in our custody and we take these allegations very seriously.

Customs and Border Patrol’s Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the matter and has alerted the DHS Office of Inspector General.

In addition, Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas has directed that personnel from the Office of Professional Responsibility be on site full-time to ensure that the responsibilities of DHS personnel are executed consistent with applicable policies and training and the Department’s values.

Secretary Mayorkas visited Del Rio today and witnessed the extraordinary work of DHS personnel. The footage is extremely troubling and the facts learned from the full investigation, which will be conducted swiftly, will define the appropriate disciplinary actions to be taken.

We are committed to processing migrants in a safe, orderly, and humane way. We can and must do this in a way that ensures the safety and dignity of migrants."

For his part, the Ambassador of Haiti in Washington Bocchit Edmond sent a correspondence, faced these deplorable events to Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of DHS in order to ensure that all Haitian nationals arriving at the border benefit from care and from an accelerated legal procedure.

Correspondence from Bocchit Edmond :

"Mr. Secretary,

I have the honor to write to you in order to draw your attention on the current situation regarding hundreds of Haitian migrants arriving at the U.S. border and stranded under a bridge in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

While my Government appreciates the efforts of the United States' Administration to extend the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitian citizens and suspending the F-1 visa rules for Haitian students currently studying in the U.S., I wish to express my grave concerns regarding the living conditions as I want to ensure that our nationals are treated with dignity and in accordance with the rule of law.

For decades, the Government of Haiti has worked with DHS on immigration and border security issues and is eager to continue this long-standing cooperation. Therefore, on behalf of the Haitian Government I would request your assistance in ensuring that all Haitian nationals arriving at the border are afforded care and expedited legal process.

I respectfully request a meeting with you in order to discuss this issue and other matters of mutual interest.

I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to you, Mr. Secretary, the assurances of my highst consideration."
