Haiti - FLASH : The public transport sector announces an unlimited work stoppage

Faced with the violence and kidnappings that increasingly affect public transport, users and drivers, unions in the transport sector are calling for an unlimited work stoppage in the 10 departments from Monday, October 18, 2021 to protest against the climate of insecurity that reigns in the country.

Changeux Méhu, the President of the Association of Owners and Drivers of Haiti (APCH) affirms that this action aims to force the authorities to assume their responsibilities reminding that everyone is concerned and can be kidnapped regardless of their social background "[...] This is why we have joined forces with all the organized groups to say no to insecurity" adding "We are not launching a day of strike; we are launching an unlimited work stoppage which will be lifted when the authorities have decided to guarantee our safety" recommending the population to stay at home on Monday.

Trade unionist Jacques Anderson Desroches, Secretary General of the Unified Movement of Transporters of Haiti (MUTH) warned, "Monday the 18th will be an observation stop. Then we will give the population a period of refueling. We will continue the consultations in order to reach a consensus to close the country. We are not going to use the term strike. It will be the total closure of the country on October 26".

For its part, the Union Force To Save Haiti (FOSAH), which supports this call, announces two days of general mobilization on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 October.
