Haiti - FLASH : Hundreds of people flee the combat zones

According to Civil Protection, Monday May 2nd, 2022, several hundred people from the Cité Soleil, Drouillard, Brooklyn, Boston, Carrefour Vincent, Butte Boyer, Croix des Missions, Marecage, Mapou, Clercine, Shada and Santo neighborhoods were forced to leave their homes, because of the intensity of the clashes between the "400 Mawozo" and "Chen Mechan" gangs who are fighting for control of the northern entrance to Port-au-Prince.

In the early hours of the morning, women, children and men, some barefoot carrying a few things, terrified at the sound of bursts of automatic weapons abandoned their homes and all their belongings to take refuge, among other places, in Bon Repos and Marine. While thousands more remain stranded at home in combat zones.

In the different neighborhoods of clashes, schools, public markets and all commercial activities are paralyzed. More than a dozen houses have been burned down in the Marécage and Butte Boyer districts.

No official human toll has been communicated since that of the Civil Protection which mentioned more than 20 civilian deaths between April 24 and 26.

Last week, hundreds of families left areas near Tabarre to take refuge in schools and public places.

If nearly half of the displaced people find refuge with a relative or friend, the other half take refuge in informal camps erected in public places, exposed to all dangers and without any health services...
