Haiti - Textile Subcontracting : S&H Global, will cut 4,000 jobs

Odney Pierre Ricot, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, accompanied by Dithny J. Raton, the special labor mediator for the clothing industry, Me Guerline Jean-Louis Labor Director, Pierre-Michel Joassaint Executive Director of the Technical Execution Unit (UTE) and Jean-Charles Amstrong Director of the Caracol Industrial Park (PIC), met on July 28, 2022, the managers of the Haitian subsidiary S&H Global of the South Korean textile group Sae-A, installed in the Park since 2012 and which employs 10,000 workers.

The discussions focused on the decision of the South Korean company to reduce its workforce by 4,000 workers (40%) by next October (announced about 2 weeks ago https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37151-haiti-subcontracting-loss-of-4-000-jobs-by-the-end-of-the-year.html ) or 8% of some 50,000 estimated workers in the sub- current treatment in Haiti

During the discussions, the leaders of S&H Global justified this decision by the 45% drop in orders from their American retail customers (in particular the Gap, Target and Walmart brands) due to the current global economic crisis...

Minister Ricot expressed his concerns about this decision which, according to him, will have serious consequences on the daily lives of the workers concerned and their families. He also asked S&H Global officials to strictly respect the rights of workers in the context of this reduction in the workforce.

For her part, Me Guerline Jean-Louis encouraged the company's leaders to continue the dialogue with the unions and to communicate regularly with the authorities of the Park and the UTE to guarantee transparency throughout the process.
