Haiti - FLASH : The United States extends the TPS for Haiti (official)

The United States extends its Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has said TPS will be extended through June 30, 2024 for recipient citizens of 6 countries from Haiti, El Salvador, Nicaragua , Sudan, Honduras and Nepal.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the extension is "to ensure its continued compliance" with orders from two ongoing court cases and was "consistent with DHS practice over the past four years".

DHS said the document, which was sent to the Federal Register, should be officially released on November 16, 2022.

Let's recall that the TPS program provides beneficiaries with work permits and can protect them from deportation if their country of origin experiences extraordinary events such as natural disasters or armed conflicts.

The extension "is a huge relief" for those on the program, said Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla, who chairs a judiciary subcommittee on immigration. He qualified the move as "a step in the right direction" but said that "more permanent" protections were needed.
