Haiti - Health : Worrying increase in the number of suspected cases of Cholera and community deaths

In response to alerts linked to the worrying increase in the number of suspected cases of Cholera and community deaths during the months of October and November 2023, the Health Decentralization Support Unit (UADS) of the Ministry of Health Public Health, jointly with other central directorates of the Ministry, carried out a special mission in the Health departments of South-East, Nippes, South and Grande-Anse.

During this mission, the Health Decentralization Support Unit (UADS) carried out, among other things, the orientation of the Mobile Rapid Intervention Teams (EMIRA) on their roles and responsibilities as well as on the implementation of sanitary cordons.

This mission also made it possible to:

  • Supervise and evaluate EMIRA activities in care sites and in communities;

  • Evaluate the quality of nursing care provided at the level of Acute Diarrhea Treatment Centers (CTDA), Cholera Treatment Centers (CTC) and referral and counter-referral community hospitals;

  • Equip EMIRAs with supervision and evaluation techniques for treatment centers for acute diarrhea and progression to cholera in communities.

Should be noted that the Ministry no longer informs citizens about the situation of the cholera epidemic in Haiti, without explanation, leaving Haitian families in the dark about cholera outbreaks. Note that the latest "daily" bulletin from the Ministry dates from November 6, 2023…
