Haiti - FLASH : The number of flood victims increases (latest partial report)

Saturday, December 7, 2024, following the floods, the Civil Protection Directorate (DPC) in its latest partial report, reveals that at least 10 people died in the departments of North, South and Grand'Anse.

In the North Department, the human toll is 6 dead, 12 injured, and one person missing. In terms of material, there are 7 houses destroyed, 302 houses damaged and more than 24,331 others flooded.

Eight of the ten municipalities in the North Department were flooded.

Faced with the devastating floods that hit Cap Haïtien, the town hall, as part of the state of emergency, convened a meeting bringing together local authorities, the municipal Civil Protection, NGOs, and technical and financial partners to coordinate response efforts.

A crisis unit was set up to supervise priority actions, and a rapid response plan was adopted. This plan focuses on :

- Immediate humanitarian assistance to affected families;

- Unclogging flooded canals and roads to restore traffic and prevent further flooding;

- Urgent mobilization of fuel and heavy machinery resources, necessary to accelerate the cleaning and rehabilitation of essential infrastructure.

In Grand’Anse, the floods have caused at least 4 deaths, 4 people are missing and 27 injured, including 8 children.

The report reveals that the bad weather has caused significant damage, seriously affecting infrastructure and agriculture. Rains have caused landslides, assessments are continuing…
