Haiti - Cap-Haitien : Modernization of the airport and project of a new international airport

Following the discussions on January 20 on the sidelines of the Afro-Caribbean Summit on Economic Development in Washington D.C. between Fritz Alphonse Jean, Presidential Transition Advisor and Ilan Goldfajn, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), a strategic mission from IDB Invest (a multilateral private sector development bank of the IDB Group, committed to supporting the private sector in Latin America and the Caribbean) was dispatched to Miami on Wednesday, January 22 to initiate initial discussions on the redevelopment of the current Cap-Haïtien airport and plan the construction of a new international airport that meets global standards.

This major project aims to boost airport infrastructure in northern Haiti while promoting collaboration between diaspora stakeholders and the Haitian private sector.

Several influential figures and experts in various fields participated in a meeting chaired by Presidential Advisor Fritz Alphonse Jean : Joe Celestin, President of NCEF, Miguel A. Southwell, aviation expert and former General Manager of Atlanta Airport, Harold Charles, airport manager and former owner of Sky-King Airline (Turks and Caicos), Ricardo Bruno Zephir, telecommunications expert and President of U2C Mobile, Fred Beliard, President of Fatima Group, Rafael Guzman, President of Cibao Atlántico and Elizabeth Robberechts, Division Manager at IDB Invest, participated

The discussion focused on the modernization of the existing airport in Cap-Haïtien, in order to meet the immediate needs of the region in terms of air transport and logistics;

The planning of a new international airport, an infrastructure that would place the North of Haiti on the map of international tourist and economic destinations. This project, supported by a consortium of diaspora entrepreneurs and local investors, embodies a desire to strengthen Haiti’s air connectivity while boosting regional economic development.

These discussions, which began in Miami, mark a significant step forward in the realization of this strategic project. The results of the deliberations will be submitted to stakeholders and the IDB for validation and gradual implementation.
