Haiti - FLASH : The Government reacts after 10 days of general blackout

While Port-au-Prince and the metropolitan area have been experiencing a prolonged general blackout since May 13, 2025, due to the forced shutdown of the Péligre hydroelectric power plant by protest organizations in Mirebalais and Saut d'Eau https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44914-haiti-flash-general-blackout.html , Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, after 10 days without power, finally reacted on Friday, May 23 with "firmness and diligence" according to a government press release...

"In exercising his sovereign responsibilities, the Head of Government has urgently convened an emergency working meeting with the Minister of Public Works and the Director General of Haiti's State Electricity (Ed'H). Specific directives have been issued to ensure that all necessary measures are implemented without delay, with a view to the rapid, sustainable, and secure restoration of power in the capital," stating "despite the magnitude of the challenges, the authority of the State remains intact."

The Péligre hydroelectric power plant restarted Friday, May 23, after being shut down by residents of Mirebalais and Saut d'Eau on May 13, who demanded that the authorities expel the bandits who control these two areas.

On Friday, Fritz Alphonse Jean, President pro tempore of the Transitional Council, confirmed a meeting with the Mirebalais and Saut d'Eau associations responsible for the closure, at the end of which the citizens committed to allowing the Péligre power plant to restart, conditional on the CPT and the Government's promises regarding security.

The Péligre / Port-au-Prince line is back online, and power will gradually be restored.
