Haiti - Agriculture : Working meeting on the revival of the Haitian poultry sector

Following the alarming observation of the growing deficit in poultry products and a heavy dependence on imports (more than 1 million eggs imported daily from the Dominican Republic), a strategic working meeting was held to discuss the challenges related to domestic egg and chicken production. The meeting was attended by Presidential Advisor Leslie Voltaire, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development Vernet Joseph, representatives of the private poultry sector, and technical partners.

In light of this situation, Advisor Voltaire emphasized the need to implement an import substitution strategy based on access to credit, technical assistance, active government support, and the reduction of taxes and duties on agricultural inputs.

The Haitian poultry sector currently imports almost all of its needs : eggs (more than 40 million eggs consumed per month), hatching eggs, animal feed, equipment, etc...

Minister Vernet Joseph welcomed the timing of this meeting, believing it realistically addresses the sector's needs. He emphasized that international competition is fierce and that pragmatic action is needed. According to him, reducing the cost of animal feed is essential to lower production costs, improve farm profitability, and meet demand, particularly within the framework of the school lunch program.

The meeting also focused on the relevance of differentiated support based on producer profiles (small or medium-sized), with the aim of stimulating job creation, increasing incomes, and contributing to national economic growth.

In closing, President Voltaire expressed his hope for a clear resolution outlining the commitments of the relevant institutions and the active role that the Executive should play alongside sector representatives, in order to make the poultry industry a lever for economic development and food sovereignty.
