Haiti - Agriculture : Colombia, Brazil and Cuba in favor of a partnership to boost the Haitian agricultural sector

Following the speech in Bogota on June 16, 2025, by Vernet Joseph, Haitian Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, at the opening of the Summit of Ministers of Agriculture of the Community of American and Caribbean States (CELAC) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45151-haiti-agriculture-minister-joseph-in-bogota-presented-haiti-s-vision-focused-on-food-sovereignty.html , Martha Carvajalino Villegas, Colombia's Minister of Agriculture, urgently convened a high-level meeting on the case of Haiti. At this meeting, held on Tuesday, June 17, between the Ministers of Agriculture of Brazil, Colombia, and Haiti, and the Vice Minister of Cuba, the concerns expressed the previous day by Minister Joseph, as well as his proposals, were taken into account by his counterparts. The Colombian Minister of Agriculture expressed her full support for the sustainable resolution of the problem of food insecurity in Haiti, in accordance with the Haitian government's wishes.

With this in mind, the participants in this extraordinary meeting agreed to jointly explore ways and means to make family farming more profitable and to establish a dynamic technical partnership to address other issues that could enable the Haitian agricultural sector to create wealth, create stable jobs, and expand into niche foreign markets.

A quadrangular action plan is also planned, which will be combined with the Colombia-Haiti bilateral protocol, initialed in January 2025. In this same vein, a joint mission (Brazil, Colombia, and Cuba) is expected soon in Port-au-Prince to further explore and implement the action plan developed for maximum effectiveness in this sector.
