Haiti - Agriculture : Colombia and Haiti progress in their agricultural cooperation

Following the commitments made by President Gustavo Petro during his official visit to Haiti on January 22, 2025 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44129-haiti-jacmel-joint-declaration-of-the-axes-of-cooperation-between-haiti-and-colombia.html , the Colombian Government received in Bogotá on Monday, July 7, 2025, a delegation led by the Embassy of Haiti in Colombia, composed of 18 Haitian officials and farmers, to launch the project "Exchange of Experiences on Good Agricultural Practices for Food Security between Haiti and Colombia," an initiative that reaffirms the Colombian Government's commitment to transformative and supportive South-South cooperation. For Eleonora Betancur González, Director of the Colombian Presidential Agency for International Cooperation (APC Colombia), "this mission is a concrete expression of the agreements and binational commitment to strong, sustainable, and equitable food security. It will enable knowledge sharing and capacity building for the implementation of sustainable seed production and conservation systems for the benefit of family, community, and small-scale agriculture in Haiti."

The Haitian mission (July 7-12) will include academic sessions in Bogotá and technical visits to the coffee-growing region, where the Haitian delegation will learn about Colombian agricultural experiences, including the coffee production system, pest management, agroclimatic monitoring, and other best practices.

"This mission is a joint, bilateral, and dedicated effort that Minister Joseph Vernet and his entire team have undertaken with our Ministry. "Your commitment, and that of your Minister, represents an opportunity to build together a global path toward just, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems," said Martha Carvajalino, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The project’s main objective is to strengthen the technical capacity of the Haitian agricultural sector through the exchange of experiences in sustainable food production, seed conservation, and crop management such as cassava, cocoa, and coffee. It also promotes the consumption of healthy foods, agricultural productivity techniques, and the application of best practices in the artisanal fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Amelia Prado Hurtado, Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated, "The cooperation we believe in is one based on listening, collaboration, respect for differences, and strengthening what we share. We are here to share, learn from each other, and continue building a more just, dignified, and humane future for our peoples."

The Colombian government, through the International Aid and Cooperation Fund (FOCAI), has donated $300,000 in humanitarian aid to the Haitian people to purchase cassava plants and other agricultural products.
