Haiti - Economy : The BRH in Les Cayes, a first in over 10 years

On Friday, August 22, 2025, Ronald Gabriel, Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), headed a high-level delegation to Les Cayes. He was accompanied by Mathieu Fortunat, its Generl Director, Florient Jean Mari, a member of the Board, Jerry Jacquet, Director of the Building Management Unit, and Gérard Jean-Baptiste, also attached to this unit.

This mission, the Governor's first to the South, is the first visit of a high-level BRH delegation to the region in over ten years, and marks an important step towards realizing the strategic vision of the Central Bank's Board of Directors for greater regional integration into the financial system.

The delegation met with the institution's executives based in Les Cayes and toured the building currently under construction, which will soon house a new branch, including BRH counters and the Directorate of the General Inspection of Caisses Populaires (DIGCP). Located at the corner of Monseigneur Maurice and Sténio Vincent streets, this project will strengthen BRH's presence in the South.

The Governor also presented the progress of a pilot project on the acceptability of electronic payments by micro-entrepreneurs (fruit and vegetable merchants, etc...) and businesses in the settlement of transactions. The pilot project will be implemented simultaneously in Port-au-Prince, Les Cayes, and Cap-Haïtien.

Finally, the Governor and his team discussed ongoing projects with Ms. Claire France, Acting Mayor of Les Cayes, and the Departmental Delegate, Linscold Charles. He took the opportunity to announce the launch, in October 2025, of the "Booster PME III" program, designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and boost the local economy in four departments, including the South.
