Haiti - Carnival : Ethnographic studies on the Jacmel carnival

Under the direction of the Director General, Mr. Erol Josué, the technical team of the National Bureau of Ethnology (BNE) — nicknamed the "laboratory of people's science" (laboratwa syans pèp la) — continued its ethnographic work on the Jacmel Carnival.

On Sunday, February 15, 2026, the team carried out several activities, including:

- Audiovisual interviews with the Director of the Jacmel Art Center, Mr. Elie Blaise;

- An observation of the Jacmel Carnival Interpretation Center (CICAJ);

- Filming and observation of carnival scenes in different neighborhoods of the city;

- Exploration and recording of all the cultural elements and scenes present along this year's carnival route.

This work offers a glimpse into the fundamentals of the Jacmel carnival. It highlights the creativity, generosity, conviviality, resilience, and critical thinking of the people of Jacmel. These elements demonstrate how essential this cultural practice is to understanding the identity of the people of Jacmel and the surrounding communities, while also illustrating the process of transmitting cultural heritage within the Haitian people.
