In Haiti, Collection of local seeds to support national reforestation

The Directorate of Forests and Renewable Energies (DFER), in collaboration with the Northeast Departmental Directorate (DDNE) of the Ministry of the Environment (MdE), intensified the national campaign to collect native and endemic seeds earlier this week. This initiative aims to protect natural resources and strengthen the country's vegetation cover.

For several days, DDNE-MdE technicians have been actively working in Carrefour Chivry and at the Morne Casse Border Police (PoliFRONT) post in the Fort-Liberté commune to collect seeds of the local mahogany tree (Swietenia mahagoni) and the guaiac tree (Guaiacum officinale), two valuable tree species for the national ecological heritage.

Agronomist Eder Audate, head of the DFER (Department of Forestry and Rural Development), commended the dynamism of Luckin Charles, the departmental director, and the sustained involvement of the technical teams mobilized for this strategic environmental operation designed to support future forest restoration and biodiversity preservation programs.

The work has already resulted in the collection of more than two 63-kilogram bags of seeds, following a rigorous methodology that takes into account fruit quality, tree morphology, vegetation cover density, and the accessibility of the targeted areas.

This initiative reflects the commitment of Environment Minister Valéry Fils-Aimé to promoting the regeneration of Haitian forests using local seeds, ensuring better adaptation of future seedlings to the country's climatic and environmental realities. After a few months in the nursery, these seeds will produce seedlings that will be used in upcoming reforestation campaigns throughout the country.
