2026 World Cup : Morocco narrowly defeats Haiti (4-2)

On Wednesday, June 24th, as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, our Grenadiers (ranked 83rd in the world), in front of an official crowd of 68,324 spectators, faced the "Atlas Lions" the Moroccan national team (ranked 7th in the world), for the first time in their history at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Despite a 4-2 defeat, Haiti exited with their heads held high and made history at the 2026 World Cup by giving Morocco a scare in this final group match.

Starting XI : Two changes compared to the previous XI against Brazil: French coach Sébastien Migné brought on #18 - Wilson Isidor (Sunderland AFC, England) and #16 - Lenny Joseph (Ferencváros TC, Hungary). Carlens Arcus and Frantzdy Pierrot remained on the bench. The Grenadiers played in a 4-4-2 formation.

Summary : A spectacular first half with 4 goals (2 for each team). Haiti surprised everyone in the 10th minute by opening the scoring with a low cross from Jean-Kévin Duverne. Lenny Joseph attempted a backheel flick, forcing Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to score an own goal. This is Haiti's first goal of the World Cup [1-0]

After multiple saves by Haitian goalkeeper Johnny Placide (13', 23', 36'), Achraf Hakimi, captain of the Atlas Lions, equalized in the 39th minute after a deflected cross [1-1].

The Grenadiers quickly regained the lead thanks to a thunderous shot from Wilson Isidor in the 43rd minute, finding the top corner after a turnover by Brahim Diaz, giving Haiti the lead again [2-1].

Just before halftime, Ismael Saibari leveled the score, converting a perfect cutback from Achraf Hakimi [2-2].

After the break, the Atlas Lions took control of the ball and increased their dominance over the Grenadiers. Substitute Soufiane Rahimi restored Morocco's lead for the first time in the match, scoring from a corner in the 78th minute [3-2].

Young Gessime Yassine sealed the victory for the Atlas Lions in the 89th minute, capitalizing on a major defensive error by Carlens Arcus, who initially thought the ball had gone out of play [4-2] after a VAR review.
