Haiti - Climate : Haiti still on alert Orange

This morning the National Meteorological Centre (CNM) in conjunction with the SPGRD decided to maintain the level of vigilance to Orange, following the heavy rains of recent days that affected the country and caused the loss of 10 Haitians.

A surface trough coming from the remnants of quasi-stationary front, continues to influence the island of Haiti, the eastern tip of Cuba, Jamaica and Puerto Rico this morning. This system projects a large cloud complex on the whole country. Isolated showers with scattered thunderstorms remain possible for the ten departments of the country today, tonight and tomorrow.

Consequently, the SPGRD maintains this Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 10 am teh alert at the level of Vigilance orange (ie impact risk of violent intensity) to heavy rains and announces the activation of face the threats of heavy rain with risks of rock falls, landslides and floods across the country including the South East, Nippes, West, Center, Artibonite, North, Northeast, and the Northwest.

The National Meteorological Center (CNM) in conjunction with the SPGRD and the DPC asks the population living in zones at risk to remain vigilant and strictly implement the following safety precautions in case of flooding, of rock falls, landslides and violent storms.

Precautions :

  • Prepare to evacuate, if necessary, the areas exposed to flooding and landslides: (waterfronts, ravines, rivers, hillsides, etc..).

  • Do not cross rivers in spate for any reason.

  • In case of severe thunderstorms, do not shelter near windows and in the woodlands.
