Haiti - Humanitarian : First International Symposium on the Role of NGOs in Haiti + Program

Incas Productions Inc., in partnership with the Consulate General of Haiti in Montreal and the Group of Reflection and Action for a New Haiti (GRAHN World) is proud to announce the launch of the First International Symposium on the Role of NGOs in Haiti, June 15 in Montreal.

Since the 2010 earthquake, efforts to help rebuild Haiti have not been based, until now on a partnership based on mutual respect between the Haitians and the international community. Two years after this disaster, an investigation of the independent organization Disaster Accountability Project has revealed that approximately 80% of the NGOs present in Haiti refused to disclose their accounts. "These organizations are very concerned about their image and if we need to do a study and to reveal their lack of transparency to encourage them to better share information, and thus better coordinate among themselves, then it's worth it," said Ben Smilowitz, Director of the project. Without transparency or honest partnership, the Haitian people can not hold anyone accountable for what happened in the country. But this must change.

In an attempt to begin a new shift in the paradigm of international aid to Haiti, and particularly with Quebec and Canada aid, Incas Productions and its partners held on 15 June, the International Symposium on the Role of NGOs in Haiti, the first of its kind to date. On this occasion a large governmental delegation and of Haitian NGOs is expected in Montreal. Distinguished guests such as Mrs. Josépha Gauthier, Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, Mr. Daniel Supplice, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad, Dr. William Pape, a pioneer in AIDS research in the world, Dr. Gabriel Thimothé, Director General of the Ministry of Health of Haiti, Professor Paul Latortue, Dean of the Faculty of business administration at the main center of the University of Puerto Rico and representatives of major NGOs such as Haiti Fonkoze, the largest microfinance business in Haiti, the Framework Inter-NGO Liaison (CLIO), a coalition of NGOs bringing together forty Haitian and foreign NGOs in Haiti before January 12, 2010 and the Institute of Technology and Animation (ITECA), one of the oldest NGOs in Haiti who proposes to strengthen farmers' organizations as agents of social change, will attend this important event.

The objectives of this symposium, open to the public, are:

  • Findings and analyzes of the role of NGOs in Haiti;

  • Encourage better coordination between the Haitian government and NGOs;

  • Encourage NGOs to work towards sustainable development in Haiti;

  • Produce and publish an e-book on the role of NGOs in Haiti.
