Haiti - Energy : Electrification of the municipality of Fleuranceau

Electrification work in the remote town of Fleuranceau [10.000 inhabitants], 6th communal section of Saint Marc [Lower Artibonite] have been launched three weeks ago that will allow to connect 1.500 houses to the public grid. Achieved by the Association "Mobilisation pour le Développement de Morne Fort par Fleuranceau" (MDMOFF) in partnership with the Electricity of Haiti (EDH), this work is funded by MINUSTAH through its Quick Impact Project (QIP) for a cost of over U.S. $ 42.000.

According to Anténor Lorméus, the General Coordinator of MDMOFF, access to electricity will enable people "to cope with the lack of security at nightfall, will encourage the study of children at night, trade refrigerated and will help pump water for domestic consumption."

Besides raising awareness of local residents and the establishment of a Management Committee of the electricity in partnership with the EDH, which will connect the families concerned to the network using meters to facilitate the collection of monthly bills of the subscription, the inhabitants of Fleuranceau will participate alongside technicians of the EDH responsible for the technical work, to the laying of 48 wooden poles on a distance of 2.5 km. The total project duration is estimated at 3 months.
