Haiti - Economy : Inauguration of a screenprinting cooperative in Martissant

Wednesday, 52 young people trained in screen printing technique, living in Martissant proceeded to the inauguration of a screen printing workshop they have established with the support of the international organization Oxfam. This workshop operates as a cooperative, will give these young people the opportunity to generate stable income while providing a quality service to institutions and residents of Martissant and surrounding areas.

These young people are among the beneficiaries of the Income Generating Programme (IGP) implemented by Oxfam in the metropolitan area since 2008 and whose objective is to contribute to reducing the phenomenon of exclusion and marginalization of residents of Martissant neighborhood, especially young people and women. This program aims to respond to access needs of these groups to better living through job creation, training and citizen participation.

Moreover, thanks to the IGP, 118 micro entrepreneurs have been recapitalized following the earthquake of January 2010, two construction companies were set up and managed as a cooperative by more than 150 artisans and a business in cutting-sewing semi-industrial is being installed. Hundreds of small traders and artisans have access to credit through the support to the strengthening of a microcredit institution, whose more than 40% of the beneficiaries are women.

"We expect that these micro-enterprises are viable and operate according to the principles of equity of the social economy that we promote and allows these young people to demonstrate that there are many other alternatives to violence and that they can be real actors of change in the neighborhood," explained Vincent Maurepas Jeudy, Associate Director of Oxfam in Haiti.
